After a soggy harvest day on Thursday, one in which we were having to dump water out of our rubber boots, we awoke this morning to another round of heavy rains. It was a morning in which it stayed dark late into the morning giving it a lazy, weekend-like feel. With the power out and the rain coming down in droves, we were able to have a relaxing morning in the house to start planning for next season . . . running budgets, discussing equipment purchases and calculating needed acreage for increased production. Sometimes it is nice to have the weather force you to spend time working on inside things that often get moved to the back burner during the busy farming season.
However, after it was all said and done, or maybe not quite done as there is still a chance for rain later tonight, we received over 3.5 inches of rain in the last 36 hours. It is difficult to complain about rain as it saves us so much time with irrigation and the plants thrive with a fresh rain, but that much precipitation in a short amount of time seems a bit excessive. As we look at the forecast–heat indexes well over 100 degrees–perhaps this large soaking rain will be just what the plants need to get through an extended heat wave. Most likely we will see a lot of new growth on the plants, as most of them love moisture and heat, which there will be no shortage of. As for the farmers and the baby, it seems like there may be a much needed trip to neighboring Lake Minne Belle for a cooling dip! Stay cool…
