One of the things we most look forward to this time of year is the arrival of all of our seeds that we order from the various seed companies. After a very long, in-depth planning and ordering process, it is exciting to have the seeds arrive at the farm. Abe thinks so too! Since Christmas and his birthday, he tends to think that all boxes that come in the mail are for him so he too has enjoyed the arrival of the seeds or at least the boxes in which they are delivered. Our excitement comes from sorting through the packets, thinking about new varieties chosen and pulling out the greenhouse planting records, field logs, and maps to fine tune our plans for the upcoming season.
Another event that grabbed Abe’s attention this winter was the huge dump truck that delivered our compost. We received 20 cubic yards of compost from Mississippi Topsoils which we will be putting on the fields this year. With the noise of the engine, the huge dump, and tons of compost spilling out the back, Abe was enthralled. There was lots of pointing and exclamations of “da! da!”.
Snowless though it is on the farm, the frosty days of February have been just beautiful, as have the moon-filled nights and coyote howls.
