- In general, most produce in your CSA box will store best in plastic bags in the crisper drawer of your refrigerator or in plastic/glass containers in the main part of your fridge.
- Crops that do not need refrigeration:
- Basil – trim the stems to remove dried-up ends, place the bunch in a glass of water; keep on the counter; basil will turn brown if too cold
- Garlic (cured) – store in a cool, dry, dark location
- Eggplant – store on the counter and use within a couple of days, shelf life is short
- Potatoes – store in a cool, dry, dark location; sunlight will cause tubers to green which can make them mildly toxic
- Tomatoes – store on the counter shoulder side down out of direct sunlight, remove from plastic bag when you open your box
- Winter Squash – will store at room temperature for at least a month; store for several months in a dry and cool location (50-55 degrees)
- Root crops with tops such as carrots, beets, radishes, or turnips should be separated from their tops for longer storage. The green tops are also edible!
